Virtual Orchestra: Community Special

The Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the ANU School of Music invite musicians from across the community to be part of Canberra’s own Virtual Orchestra: Community Special presented by ActewAGL and Lendlease.

Orchestral players of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. Download the recording guide and submit your recordings of two well-loved pieces of music by midnight Monday 8 June, selected by Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Dr Nicholas Milton AM:

Jamaican Rumba is perhaps the best-known work by Australian composer Arthur Benjamin, with countless arrangements from two pianos to orchestra. The work was so popular that it earned Benjamin a free barrel of rum each year from the Jamaican Government for the publicity!

A piece that needs no introduction, the Can Can has made countless appearances in popular culture, from Dr Who to Moulin Rouge. The piece comes from French composer Offenbach’s comic operetta Orpheus in the Underworld.
