From time to time our musicians get involved in exciting events, making sure that the energy and excitement of music is enjoyed by many people in many places. Here is a very fine example of that...
CSO Musicians at Lerida Estate
During August a number of CSO musicians will be playing at Lerida Estate, Lake George as part of the Fireside Festival. Lerida Estate is the current Wine Partner of CSO.
Lerida Estate Fireside Festival Concert Program
Concert 1:Saturday 2 August 2008, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Con - Trio
Con – Trio (Timothy Wickham, Liam Morrissey and Sally Greenaway) will present a relaxed and entertaining afternoon of chamber music that will feature award winning original works by Greenaway, as well as a selection of light jazz and classical music reflections. (Violin/Cello/Piano)
Concert 2:Saturday 9 August 2008, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Trio Tamburlaine
Trio Tamburlaine (Philippa Thompson, Ewan Foster, Shahn Paterson) will perform gems of the string trio repertoire. One the classical period’s greatest innovators, Franz Josef Haydn, is responsible for a wealth of instrumental music, including many string trios. Trio Tamburlaine will present a selection of Haydn’s late trios, contrasting their robust good humour with the work of his younger, more tempestuous contemporary, Ludwig van Beethoven.
Concert 3:Saturday 16 August 2008, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Wicked-Strings Quartet
Don’t expect the average wedding string quartet! In addition to classical favourites, experience Wicked-Strings (4 Canberra Symphony Orchestra players) and its eclectic repertoire of popular Latin American grooves and rock favourites from the 60’s and 70’s. (2 x violin/viola/cello)
Concert 4:Saturday 23 August 2008, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Café Jazz Soiree
Violinist Timothy Wickham and award winning Canberra pianist and composer Sally Greenaway will present an appetising collection of light jazz and café favourites from Gershwin, Porter and Piazzolla, to moments from the French film Amélie. Accompanied by acoustic double bass and light percussion, this will be an exciting collaboration by emerging professional Canberra classical and jazz musicians. (violin/piano/double bass/percussion)
Concert 5:Saturday 30 August 2008, 3.30 - 5.30pm
Trio Tamburlaine
Trio Tamburlaine will perform gems of the string trio repertoire.
Started in 2005, this year's Fireside Festival has grown to be the biggest ever with over 20 venues participating. Visitors can 'make their winter escape an escape to winter' with cosy fireside experiences such as fabulous local wine and music, delicious degustation dinners, studio tours with local artists and lots of other activities to warm their way through winter.
Co-founder of the Fireside Festival and owner of Grazing Restaurant in Gundaroo, Jennie Mooney said 'There's nothing better in winter than getting cosy with a big glass of red wine by the open fire as you listen to fine music with your friends'.
The concerts will be held in the barrel room at Lerida Estate (great acoustics!) and music featured will include classical, light jazz, Latin American, rock favourites from the 60’s and 70’s, café style from Gershwin, Porter and Piazzolla, to moments from the French film Amélie. There is definitely something for everyone on the diverse program (see below for program details and dates).
The concerts, being held between 3.30-5.30 each Saturday afternoon in August, have been timed to allow guests to enjoy lunch at Café Lerida before the concert, and then go onto dinner at one of the other Fireside Festival restaurant participants: see www.firesidefestival.com.au.
Each concert will include a 30 minute interval during which guests will be offered canapés matched with Lerida Estate wine. At the end of the concert, enjoy hot chocolate, mulled wine, tea or coffee, with roasted chestnuts and petit fours. The musicians will be joining guest during the interval and at the end of the concert.
Before the concert, guests may want to do the Lake George Vineyards Walk. Commence the walk in the Lerida Estate carpark, walk through the Lerida Estate vineyard, then above the Lake George Winery vineyard and down past Grapefoodwine Restaurant (under new management) and back to Lerida Estate. Walk takes approx 45-60 minutes. Bring walking shoes. See www.leridaestate.com/events.html.
So - if you want something interesting to do in August - and dont have any concerts to go to - head out to Lerida Estate for something different!
