The CSO’s 2008 Llewellyn Series concludes with PASSION. A Russian program expressing an extraordinary range of human emotion, we begin with the delicate tenderness of Mussorgsky’s atmospheric depiction of dawn on the Moscow River.
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is a virtuoso showcase for a soloist, barely containing its emotional turbulence and passions. In what will be a sensational performance, we welcome the Russian-Australian pianist, Alexey Yemtsov, recently selected by Vladimir Ashkenazy as one of our country’s most exciting young virtuosos. Fresh from performances with Ashkenazy and the Sydney Symphony, Yemtsov brings his unique combination of effortless technique and emotional maturity to this famous work. The power and emotion of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony concludes the concert and our season. When Shostakovich wrote this symphony in response to Stalin’s criticisms, he may have felt that his very life depended on the success of this work. The success was instant and lasting, and the work’s raw human emotion is balanced by triumph over the most demanding artistic conditions. The entire journey of the composer’s struggle is reflected in a work that leaves audiences breathless and moved. Join us as we celebrate one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive and personal composers in this journey through emotion, ecstasy and triumph. A concert of passion to inspire.
