Llewellyn Series 12:4
================
In this final Llewellyn blockbuster for 2012 we open with Berlioz's dazzling Roman Carnival before being joined by one of Australia's most scintillating artists, cellist Julian Smiles. His interpretation of the remarkable First Concerto by Shostakovich is a performance of emotional focus and searing intensity. The evening concludes with the beloved “Organ” Symphony by Saint-Saëns. This is a magnificent work like no other - with astonishing melodic turns, delicate colours, and above all, a design and architecture of immense grandeur.
================

"This is one of my favourite cello concertos. It starts with menacing power and ends in a manic fury, but it is in the beauty and sadness of the second movement that the work has its heart. It also has one of the longest and most exciting cadenzas in the repertoire!" Julian Smiles
